1915 Danzig GEW 98 Reworked & Used in Spanish Civil War
Description: For sale, a GEW 98 made by Danzig in 1915 that was likely used by the Germans in WW1, then by Franco's victorious Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War. This rifle started life as a standard GEW 98 in 1915. The GEW 98 was the standard rifle of the German army in WW1 and was also used by many of Germany's allies. After ther war ended, a number of GEW 98s were reworked by the Weimar Republic for the police forces and the small standing army they were allowed to keep under the Treaty of Versailles. The Germans made a number of changes to the rifle to bring it up to date and rectify any shortcomings that were discovered during the war. This rifle had the rear sight replaced with one better matched the new heavier SS 8mm ammo they were using, and the bolt and receiver were blued. A number of the small parts were replaced if they were worn or rusted, and it was hit or miss if they were renumbered or not. This rifle has a matching bolt body to the receiver, but the safety and other small parts like the bands are not. In the 1930's the Germans decided to support Franco in his fight in Spain. The Germans sent both troops and weapons to support Franco in what is known as the Spanish Civil War. One of the rifles that Germany sent were these reworked GEW98s. These can be identified by the flaming bomb cartouche on the stock containing the letters/number "MP 8". This example is one of those rifles sent to Spain. The flaming bomb cartouche on this GEW 98 is nice and dark and legible. As you can see in the pictures, this rifle is in good condition with a conservative 96% of the factory blue finish remaining. It has a great look to it and has obviously been well cared for over the years. The bore is a little dark, but the rifling is still strong and there is very little throat and muzzle erosion. The stock is in great shape with no cracks or repairs that I can find. It has what I think is a period correct sling that is also in excellent shape, still flexible and soft with the cross hatch stamping design on the outer surface. This would be a great addition to any military rifle collection. Priced to sell!
