Marlin 1893 Octagon 38-55 Winchester
Description: Marlin model 1893 with 24" octagon barrel in 38-55 Winchester. Action is smooth and tight. Lockup is great. Trigger pull is crisp; probably the best I've even seen on an old lever action. Some screw slots are strong, others show wear. Wood is good and solid with the expected knicks and scratches for a rifle made in 1894, according to serialization charts. Marlin Safety inscribed on top of frame. Faint 38-55 caliber marking on top of barrel. Nice pleasing patina over what I believe to be original finishes. Front sight is a modern replacement, which could easily be replaced with a traditional blade if desired. This rifle's bore has been "relined". The new bore is shiny and shows sharp clear rifling. The liner stops about an inch short of the muzzle. The last inch of the original bore was apparently drilled out slightly so the bullet exiting the liner would not be thrown off course by the worn out old rifling. This is a more expensive and exacting method of relining a rifle bore. Typically, the entire bore is drilled out and a liner is inserted the entire barrel length, leaving a plainly visible circular seam at the muzzle. This rifle's liner is not visible when viewing the gun, thus maintaiining its original appearance to the casual observer. Rifle has been test fired and functions properly. Suitable for both display and use. The cost of such a relining job would likely equal the price of this rifle. I will let the photos tell the rest of the story.
