Marlin ~ 1889 Marlin Safety ~ .38-W (.38-40 WCF)
Description: This circa 1892 lever action rifle is a Marlin Firearms Co 1889 MARLIN SAFETY chambered in .38-W [.38-40 WCF]. It has a Rocky Mountain fixed brass blade front sight, an adjustable buckhorn style rear sight, a 24" octagonal barrel, a full length magazine tube, a smooth round fore arm, a straight pistol grip butt stock with comb, and a steel crescent butt plate. It has an intact lever catch. The top of the barrel is marked "MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CT. U.S.A. / PATENTED OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL. 2. 1889" and ".38-W". The top of the receiver is marked "MARLIN SAFETY". The serial number is found on the underside of the receiver [74124]. The metal shows a great patina, with a reddish oxidation cast overall, and with some rust and pitting observable in various locations. The wood fore arm and butt stock are in fair condition, showing significant handling wear and marks throughout, but with no cracks visible. The Marlin Model 1889 Lever Action was the first of Marlin's solid top, side ejection rifles. All the lever rifle models that followed (1894, 1895, 39 and 336) descend from this design. Among the several Marlin firearms Annie Oakley owned, she particularly cherished a special presentation, engraved 1889 model. The 1889 Marlin was the first solid-top receiver, lever action rifle with a side ejection that threw the fired cases, or live cartridges, to the right-hand side of the rifle as opposed to being thrown straight up and out of the gun. This classic example is in the very desirable Winchester .38-40 caliber, with a 24" octagonal barrel and full length magazine tube. .38 WCF Price: $1,349.99 Metal Condition: "Metal shows a great patina, with a reddish oxidation cast, some rust and pitting observable in various locations Wood Condition: "Wood fore arm and butt stock are in fair condition, showing significant handling wear and marks throughout, but with no cracks visible Barrels: 24" octagonal barrel Stock Dimensions: "13"" LOP, overall length 42½"" Fore End: Smooth round capped forearm Butt Pad: Steel crescent butt plate Weight: 6 lbs 13 oz Sights: "Rocky Mountain fixed brass blade front sight, adjustable buckhorn style rear sight Item Location: Wichita, KS Contact Seller |
