1954 Vintage Marlin Model 39A Mountie .22 Caliber Lever Action Carbine
** Clean & Beautiful Example of Early Mountie ** SOLD
Description: This is a beautiful, high-condition vintage Marlin Model 39A Mountie .22 caliber lever-action carbine manufactured in 1954, during the second year of production for this model variation. First introduced in 1953, the .22 caliber lever-action repeater Model 39A Mountie featured a gloss-blue factory finish, a carbine-length 20" inch barrel, factory iron sights with a hooded front sight, and a straight-grip American Walnut stock set with a slender forearm. This made for a much more compact and handy rifle than the standard Model 39A which had a 24" inch barrel and a pistol-grip stock set. The Model Model 39A Mountie quickly proved to be an excellent rifle and was a commerical success for Marlin. It remained in production in this form until 1957, when a gold-finished trigger was added and it was renamed the "Golden" 39A Mountie which remained in production until 1972. This particular example is one of the first model Mounties and is in excellent condition overall. It is 100% original except for the barrel being drilled and tapped for a scope mount on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight and just in front of the receiver. This is a common addition to these carbines as there were no provisions for a scope mount on these early guns. Luckily, as you can see from the pictures provided, whomever did the drilling and tapping did a superb job; not disturbing the metal or finish around the holes and drilling with perfect placement. With the blued plug screws in, the additional holes look factory if you didn't know any better. The factory gloss-blue finish on this Mountie is beautiful, rating 95% plus. Outside of a few scattered very minor handling marks, the only areas that show some finish wear or thinning are on the inside upper surface of the lever loop, on the hammer and pivot point of the lever where metal to metal contact occurs when the action is worked, and the bottom edge of the magazine tube. As you can see from the pictures, this stuff does very little to detract from the clean and handsome overall look of this Mountie. All of the factory markings are crisp and clear, and all of the action screws and hardware are original and in great shape. The bore in this Mountie is mirror-bright and pristine. The Marlin "Micro-Groove" rifling is sharp and clean, and there is no pitting, erosion, or imperfections of any kind visible in the bore. The original American Walnut straight-grip stock set is in superb condition. Both the buttstock and forearm are free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major dings/damage. The Walnut is a beautiful dark red-brown and the slender forearm and buttstock are a perfect match to each other in every way. The buttstock still has the original black-and-white Marlin "Bullseye" insert in-place, and the factory buttplate and white spacer are in excellent condition overall and tight to the wood. The factory hand-tuned action on this Mountie carbine is smooth, slick, and precise. It locks up into battery perfectly with the lever tight to the lower tang, and the bolt snugs up tightly to the barrel. These 1950's production Model 39A actions really have to be felt to truly be appreciated, they are so much better than any of the new stuff. The hammer still has both the half-cock and full-cock notches intact, and the trigger breaks nicely with light pull without any slop. The one-screw take-down design works perfectly, and all of the internals are just as clean and free from wear as the exterior. This Marlin will function no doubt just as well today as it did when it left the factory 66 years ago. If you have been looking for an investment-quality Marlin Model 39A Mountie for your collection that you can still shoot, this 1954-production example would be the perfect choice. As long as you take good care of it you should be able to enjoy shooting this one at the range or farm and it still be a great long-term investment. This Marlin Mountie is C&R eligible.
