1830s-40s Antique J. ODGEN Half Stock Percussion HOMESTEAD/HUNTING Rifle
NEW YORK Made Mid-1800s GAME GETTING Rifle
Description: 1830s-40s Antique J. ODGEN Half Stock Percussion HOMESTEAD/HUNTING Rifle NEW YORK Made Mid-1800s GAME GETTING Rifle Here we present an antique J. Ogden Half Stock Percussion Rifle made circa the 1830s to the 1840s. Jehial Ogden of Oswego, Tioga County, New York, was active around the 1830s and 1840s. The percussion rifle was a type of rifle that utilized the percussion lock mechanism to fire a bullet or musket ball. The Percussion lock mechanism was an evolution of the flintlock mechanism used on earlier muskets and rifles, with the percussion rifle being introduced somewhere around 1820. The percussion rifle had a slight advantage when it came to rate of fire over its flintlock counterparts. This example’s stout octagonal barrel is in .40 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many of the maker’s names of these percussion rifles have been lost over time. This is one such example. The overall condition is fine. Original smooth dark brown patina. Strong action, with both half and full cock positions. Bright bore with well defined rifling. The stock is in very good shape with less than average wear. Markings are legible. The lock is lightly engraved with floral designs. This rifle would have also been used to put food on the table or defend the homestead against unwanted intruders! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33-1/2 inches. Caliber: .40 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
