“JAMES MARKER” Antique MARYLAND Long Rifle
Description: “JAMES MARKER” Antique MARYLAND Long Rifle American Half Stock Long Rifle made Circa 1832 Here we present an antique Half Stock Percussion Rifle, made circa 1832. The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle: “From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination. Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.” This .47 (approximately; grooves at widest are .50) caliber rifle is hand marked “James Marker” on the top of the barrel. James Marker was a member of a family of Maryland gun makers based around the western part of the state, namely Hagerstown, Myersville, and Sharpsburg. Other known gun making Markers include George, Daniel, Daniel Jr., Paul, Peter, and Jacob. James was based in Myersville and known to have been active in 1832. The lock on this rifle is marked “JOSH GOLCHER”. It also features double set triggers. The overall condition is fair to good. The barrel and lock are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The brass has been polished. The stock is a replacement that is generally in good condition, but has a repair along the forestock on the right side, and the lock inletting is a bit crude. The bore has clear rifling and is clean. The action is functional, with no half-cock. Rear trigger must be set to put hammer in cock. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 39 inches in length. Caliber: .47 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
