Hartmann & Weiss Mauser sporting rifle, 9.3x64 Brenneke, 26" bl., light engraving with gold inlays, New in Case
Description: Hartman & Weiss, custom Mauser sporting rifle for Africa, 9.3x64 Brenneke, 26” bl., light engraving with gold inlays, New in Case Hartmann & Weiss, Hamburg, Germany, custom Mauser with half octagon and half round, tapered 26” barrel with mint bore, open sights and detachable German scope mounts… fitted with a Zeiss Victory 1.5-6x42 professional hunter scope. About the Cartridge: The following quote is from Cartridges of the World, “Except in name, the 9.3x64 Brenneke has “Magnum” written all over it. This “.375 H&H- Magnum-class” number is certainly adequate for any North American big game and most game worldwide. Production of the ammunition stopped in World War II but now that this cartridge is available again, its use is expected to increase. From the American Rifleman, July 2022 issue, article “Sniping in Ukraine”, by Maj. John Plaster, U.S. Army (Ret.), pp.55-56, “(In 2018), Russia fielded the SVD-K rifle, chambered for the rimless 9.3x64 Brenneke… a cartridge designed for African big-game hunting. Offering performance akin to the .375 H&H Mag., the Brenneke propels a 256-grain bullet at 2,520 f.p.s. Apparently, the Russians developed the SVD-K rifle to penetrate body armor out to 600 meters.” Tactical Surplus USA now carries 9.3x64 Brenneke cartridges at very modest prices and the availability is plentiful from Brown Bear ammunition and others. The new Rigby Mausers have recently added 9.3x64 Brenneke as available now in their new rifles. Rifle Description: Hartmann & Weiss is to Mausers, as Purdey is to side-by-side sidelocks, as Fabbri is to over and unders. From the onset, H & W firearms were and have been absolutely peerless in quality throughout, being universally recognized as such, which would account for both the 3-4 year wait for a new gun and the scarcity of pre-owned examples. Today, that reputation has grown to include fine shotguns as well. Here is the crème de la crème of Mausers in the best caliber ever designed for Africa in a non-magnum action, recently brought back and given a new life as the standard round for Russian snipers. This gun has been designed to fill the need of an all-around one-gun African rifle, heavy enough to support the recoil, without the carrying weight of a magnum bolt action, yet equal in power to a 375 H&H. The 9.3x64 Brenneke cartridge was designed for these parameters – an ideal mating of gun and caliber for Africa combining light weight for all-day carry, but tough enough to handle anything… without suffering heavy recoil. The overall shape of the gun is in the style of the British African tradition -- with integral ramp front sight, island rear sight with one standing and two folding gold lined leaves (marked 100 and 150) scored with gold vertical center lines. H&W hasn’t missed a trick, including the Rechnagel version of the Winchester Model 70 three-position safety that carries an additional locking lever that must be pressed downward first to release the lateral movement of the safety arm, the direction indicated by an inlaid gold arrow. The breech bolt sleeve is inlaid with a gold F to indicate the location for “fire ready.” Inscriptions: On the rib, it is inscribed, “Hartmann & Weiss” and centered under that, “Hamburg”. This world-class action is the proven German big-ring Mauser 98 popular with Professional Hunters for its controlled round-feeding, classic Mauser straight bolt handle adapted for scope clearance, and fitted with double set triggers. Built as a true sporting rifle, the engraving is embellished with light gold wire scrolls: one on the left and one on the right front receiver ring, one on the receiver wall, two more on the left and two on the right rear receiver rings and one more as a barrel band with curlicues. Border engraving shows on both boundaries along the length of the solid integral rib. The under-metal has a beautiful typical Hartmann & Weiss engraving pattern consisting of a combination of intricate scrolls, border lines, curlicues, and metal checkering, exquisitely executed on the classic bullet-release floorplate, the trigger guard, and the floorplate hinge. Action screws are engraved. The bolt knob is checkered with three patterns and terminates with a bottom circle bordered in gold. The caliber designation is inlaid in gold, inscribed on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the front receiver ring. All of the engraved areas are accented with gold wire. The stock, made of exhibition grade English walnut, follows the British pattern recently made famous by Ralf Martini for Heym’s magnum rifles, but standardized by H&W many years before. It has a classic comb with shadowline cheekpiece, a foreshortened forearm terminating with an ebony forearm tip, an open pistol grip finished with a coved ebony pistol grip cap, an engraved crossbolt reinforcing the stock to prevent breaking from recoil, a rear sling swivel, and a black ¾” leather-covered recoil pad. The English walnut figure is enchanting with fiddleback ga lore and the hand-checkering is the classic point pattern at 28 lpi coming together at the wrist. The four points on the wrist are mullered with single border lines and the remainder of the pattern is bordered by a single border. The forearm checkering fully wraps around with four mullered points with single border along the barrel lines. As you would expect, the checkering is meticulous and perfect. Weight 9 ¾ lbs. with scope, stock LOP is 14 5/8 to front trigger, 13 7/8” to the rear trigger. Scope is a Zeiss Victory 1.5-6x, made in Germany, and mounted in the fast-detachable German EAW rings notable for returning the scope to zero. For finish, the metal is superbly finished with the highest quality rust blue, and the stock is hand-polished with classic French oil, a rich but slow process consisting of many polished coats with long drying times in between. With a very cool serial number, 11111, the overall condition is virtually mint showing no evidence of use and the bore is shiny with strong rifling. It comes with maker’s leather case with canvas outer shell. Accessories include gold oil bottle, two horn-handled turn-screws, and a quality ¾” leather sling with leather-covered buckle. About the Maker: Hartmann & Weiss GmbH, Rahlstedter Bahnhofstrasse 47, Hamburg, 22143 Otto Weiss and Gerhard Hartmann started Hartmann & Weiss in 1965. Otto finished his training as a gunsmith in 1955 in Suhl (the gunmaking capital of Germany). Gerhard finished his in Hamburg in 1959. Gerhard Hartman was trained by a master gunmaker in Ferlach, Austria before working at Krieghoff and becoming a master gunmaker himself. Otto furthered his knowledge in Switzerland and worked at Purdey’s in London from 1960 to 1964. The two met in 1963 at a renowned sporting arms retailer in Hamburg and in 1965, formed their company and joined to produce individually crafted sportsman’s firearms. The small workshop gained notoriety. By the end of the 1970s with orders they could not keep up with, to expand, they found a suitable site in Rahlstedt with enough workspace and a 100-meter underground rifle range. In 1971, the popular master gunsmith Peter Nelson left Purdey to join H & W. In 1980, they were the first German company to manufacture a new magnum Mauser bolt action, and they re-kindled the flame for the Kurtz or short action Mauser. The rising demand continued and they had to increase their manpower to six master gunsmiths. Although today, besides Mausers, they also make side-by-side and over-and-under shotguns, as well as double rifles in both configurations, but their goal has not changed: “To provide customer satisfaction through the highest craftsmanship available.” More about the Cartridge: From Cartridges of the World, “ “Except in name, the 9.3x64 Brenneke has “Magnum” written all over it. This “.375 H&H- Magnum-class” number is certainly adequate for any North American big game and most game worldwide. The estimable John Taylor rated it right along with the .375 H&H Magnum as an excellent all-round cartridge for African hunting.” Not well known in the United States, it would probably be more of a success here if better publicized. Brown Bear, RWS, Sellier & Bellot, and A-Square offer ammunition and components; and Barnes and Speer make appropriate bullets.” SOLD Rifle Caliber: 9.3x64mm Brenneke Manufacturer: Hartmann & Weiss Condition: New Action: Big Ring Mauser Triggers: Set Triggers LOP: 14 5/8 and 13 7/8 Rib: Integral hand filed, engraved Case: Leather Trunk case |
