1945 Harrington & Richardson Model 165 Leatherneck .22 Semi-Auto Rifle
** Exceptional All-Original 1st Year Example! ** SOLD
Description: This is an absolutely beautiful 1st year production Harrington & Richardson Model 165 "Leatherneck" .22 caliber self-loading rifle made in late 1945 just after World War 2 ended. The H&R Model 165 was essentially a commercial version of the Reising Model 65 semi-auto .22 trainer used by the U.S. Marine Corps during World War 2. The H&R Leatherneck features a factory blue finish on a blow-back operated semi-auto action, a 23" inch round tapered barrel with a ramped front iron sight, a factory-installed Redfield Model 79 receiver-mounted peep sight, and an American Walnut pistol grip stock with factory-installed sling swivels and a buttplate. Manufacured from late 1945 to 1947, with a special short production run in 1961, there were not very many of these neat rifles made. While they were not a particularly great commercial success in the late 1940's when they first came out, they are a prized collectible today and a very well-made and attractive rifle by any standard. This particular Leatherneck is serial number 247, made in the month or so of production in late 1945. It is an all-original and complete rifle in excellent overall condition. The original factory blue rates 97%, with only just a touch of patina on the top of the receiver and no real wear to speak of. As you can see from the pictures, it really has beautiful factory finish. The bore in the 23" inch barrel is minty and bright, with no pitting, erosion, or imperfections of any kind visible. The factory original American Walnut stock is in excellent condition overall, with no cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage. The wood shows some minor handling/storage marks in various places but has a very clean attractive look to it. The factory installed sling swivels are intact and in excellent condition, as is the factory-installed H&R-branded buttplate which is perfectly fit and tight to the wood. All of the controls on this Model 165 are in 100% perfect working order, and the bolt goes into battery perfectly with lots of force. This rifle has obviously been fired very very little and we have no doubt that it would function today just as well as the day it left the factory 74 years ago. If you have been looking for a "collector grade" Leatherneck for your collection this 1st year production rifle would be a superb choice. It would be nearly impossible to upgrade from this beautiful all-original example.
