HARPERS FERRY US MODEL 1842, .69CAL – 1848, BAYONET, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Harpers Ferry, 1848, .69CAL, 9lbs. 7oz., LOP 13 3/8″ Serial Number: NSN The U.S. Model 1842 represents a major step in United States weapon development. This was the first American weapon to be built around the concept of interchangeable parts. Harpers Ferry Armory was the birthplace of what became known as the ‘American System of Manufacture’ in which full interchangeability of parts made in different factories could be utilized throughout the production of weapons. The Model 1842 was manufactured at Springfield and Harpers Ferry arsenals and others. The Model 1842 is a percussion musket with a smooth bore firing a .69 caliber bullet. This model was also the last U.S. regulation .69 gun to enter service. Around 275,000 were manufactured between 1844 and 1855, with nearly two-thirds of these produced at Springfield, Harpers Ferry producing almost 107,000, making this example a much rarer find. The Model 1842 was used by both sides during the American Civil War before becoming surplus and finding their way into the homesteads of America. This HARPERS FERRY made example shows in the white metal fittings with some patina, The breech of the musket is crisply marked with the V P and Eagle Head proof and inspection marks, excellently defined Eagle on the lock plate clasps two arrows while the legend ‘HARPERS FERRY 1848’ is strong and crisp. The date 1848 is also stamped on the upper tang. The buttplate is stamped US. There are two cartouches on the left flat, faint but visible. The walnut stock is in excellent condition for a martial arm that is 176 years old! The bore is in great condition. The gun retains its ramrod and is supplied with a US marked bayonet and a horn powder flask. This gun is an antique and can be shipped directly to your home. Thanks for looking!
