FN USA PS90 5.7x28 16” Rifle Excellent Condition with TLR-1HL Flashlight
Description: The PS90 is the civilian legal version of the P90 submachine gun. The latter was introduced to the world in 1990 (hence the designation P90) as part of a plan to replace the 9mm pistols and sub-machineguns currently in NATO’s arsenal with a pistol and sub-machinegun combo chambered for a new, small-caliber pistol round designed to be able to pierce body armor with the ability to tumble afterwards in order to maximize wounding potential. FN’s entry to this contest was the P90 and FN Five-Seven pistol, chambered in the 5.7x28mm cartridge. H&K’s entry was the MP7 sub-machinegun and UCP pistol, chambered for their own 4.6x30mm cartridge. Testing by NATO in 2002 – 2003 showed the 5.7 round to be far superior, with the 4.6x30mm cartridge giving such poor ballistic performance from the UCP that the pistol was cancelled altogether. Unsurprisingly, Germany and a few other countries refused to standardize on the 5.7 and so the 9mm remains as the NATO standard pistol cartridge to this day. Fortunately, FN realized what they had in the P90 and marketed it worldwide finding far more success with it than H&K with the MP7. Indeed, the P90 became so popular that FN was encouraged to release a civilian-legal carbine in the US as the PS90. Aside from the obvious difference of being semi-automatic only, the PS90 also has a longer barrel to meet the NFA requirement of having a 16-inch-long barrel. This length includes the integral muzzle brake, and so the actual length of the rifling in the bore is 14.8 inches. Although FN normally sells the PS90 with a 10 or 30-round magazine, this example comes with a full 50-round magazine. There is no physical difference between the three, other than a spacer present in the first two to limit magazine capacity. All controls are ambidextrous. This example is pre-owned but has seen very little use. It is equipped with a Streamlight TLR-1 HL flashlight on the left side picatinny rail. The rail has been cut in two places (one at each end) to better fit the contours of the PS-90. Please see the pictures. There is some light finish wear on the top picatinny rail, but the rest of the carbine’s external surface has little to no wear. The surface area of the internal dust cover has some definite wear from contact with the bolt. This is not unusual for the PS90 and was considered acceptable by FN. It should be borne in mind that the dust cover’s sole function is to prevent dust from getting into the action. The PS90 does not actually need the part in order to function. In any case, many PS90 owners have stated before that they have seen the dust cover take a beating but never fail. The bore is in pristine shape, but the stand-off nature of the muzzle brake makes it very difficult to take a good picture of the bore. I apologize for the poor quality. There is no box. The PS90 would make an excellent home defense gun. SOLD Rifle Caliber: 5.7x28mm Manufacturer: FN USA Model: PS90 Serial Number: FN093195 Bore: Rifled, 8 grooves, 1:9 in.
