Wow!!! What a history. In spite of pressure from their enemies in the 1950s the Israel Defense Forces were able to order brand new 98k Mausers directly from FN. In 1966 the IDF decided to covert 499 of the guns into badly needed snipers. They contracted a Swiss optical firm, Wild Heerbrugg, to make a special scope and mount for the guns. These scopes and mounts are the only ones made by this firm for the gun. The mount necessitated installing an all new serial number on the receiver. The serial number range, was 200232 to 200731. Our gun is 200578. All of the snipers had their stocks lengthened, and a large resin cheek rest and rubber butt pad were also installed increasing the stock length by 2 3/4". They also extended safety lever for easier use under the scope. The barrel bands were modified and FN sling swivels were installed so that they could accept U.S. target slings. The front sight hood has been pinned, and a tool was made available for adjusting the front for windage. A signature of the IDF K-98s. The scope is a 4X with the usual post and cross hair reticle and is marked with the Star of David and the Israel Property mark. The receiver is marked the same. The guns were used during the Six Day War and continued in service until years later were sent to the Israeli settlements or Kibbutzes. This 98K sniper is an Israeli gun.

The condition of the rig reflects the many years it spent as the best sniper for the desert warfare that the IDF had. The bolt and the receiver match. The parkerized finish on the metal parts is about 80%. The stock is in fair condition with a bit of color fading from the sun but other than many little surface dings there are no splits or gouges. The stock extension was not color matched at that time. The scope is fully functional however the camo paint job has been worn thin in many areas from years of use in the desert. The bore is really great, surprisingly bright with very well define rifling and just some minor scattered frost. There are probably less than a couple of dozen of these known to exist.
