Rare Boer War Canadian Lee-Enfield MkI (With Carbine Swivels)
Description: Serial #5428, .303 British, 30 1/4 inch barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an 1896 dated rifle with matching-numbered bolt, that has retained 90-95% of the original blue finish. There is silvering along some of the high edges, and the metal has faded to a mellow plum-brown along the balance. The bolt has streaks of gray along the bearing surfaces, and a sheet metal front sight protector is fitted that swings 90º to the right. The original rear barrel sight and volley sights are also present. The walnut stock and forend have numerous small handling marks and blemishes in the armory-added oil finish with a Canadian “RMC" stamp on the left side of the forend (Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston, Ontario). Additionally, the rifle is outfitted with a carbine swivel on the left side between the barrel band and front volley sight, as well as a carbine sling bar on the buttstock. A correct chained magazine, and a brass-tipped cleaning rod are included. Some Long Lee-Enfield rifles were modified in this manner for service with Canadian mounted rifle units sent to the Boer War. Those rifles were generally marked with “M&D" (Militia & Defence) stamps, but this example appears to have been taken from RMC stores, and modified for African service without the additional stamp. This is a very rare, Boer War era Mk. I Long Lee variant, and would make a great addition to any collection.
