British Pattern 1853 Rifle Musket (Isaac Hollis & Sons)
Description: NSN, .577 caliber, 39" barrel with a very good, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This is an 1862 dated, “TOWER" marked musket that has about 80-85% of the original browned finish remaining on the barrel with some plum-brown pitting at the breech surrounding the nipple bolster, and some mild freckling up to the lightly silvered muzzle. The lockplate has a darkly mottled gray-brown patina with clear “(crown)" marking and some mild freckling on and around the base of the hammer. The brass triggerguard, nosecap, and screw bolsters have an attractive, dull yellow-ochre patina with a few scattered peen marks here and there, and the barrel bands match the lockplate patina. The walnut stock has a crisp and deeply struck “BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS TRADE" cartouche on the right side of the buttstock with the remainder of the wood exhibiting numerous small surface blemishes and bruises in the original oil finish. The belly of the butt is contractor marked, “ISAAC HOLLIS & SONS", with a small “(crown)/B/STA" proofstamp just behind the trigger guard tang. Isaac Hollis & Sons were a well known London firm that operated between 1862 – 1900, supplying both the commercial and government markets. The brass buttplate has an issue marking visible (“9") and both an original iron ramrod and period leather sling are included. The mechanism functions flawlessly and the musket rates very good condition overall. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Enfield Model: 1853 Caliber Info: .577 Gauge Info: .577 |
