**SOLD**RARE Lee-Enfield SMLE No.1 Mk.V Experimental / Trials Rifle in .303 British Caliber **Mfg 1924 **
Description: **SOLD**This is a very cool and rare "Experimental Trials" Lee Enfield No. 1 Mk V bolt-action rifle chambered in .303 British caliber. The No.1 Mk.V was an experimental / trials rifle that was developed and built in 1924, falling between the No.1 Mk.III rifle variants and the No.1 Mk.VI rifle, which later model became the Lee Enfield No.4 Mk.I once the design and improvements were all finalized. This was the first No.1 SMLE with a folding-leaf aperture rear sight mounted at the rear of the action, instead of the normal location out on the barrel in front of the action. Essentially a No.1 Mk.III* rifle, the action body was modified to accommodate the new wide folding-leaf sight that incorporated, in its folded down position, a peep aperture within a cut-out window designed for typical engagement ranges of 50 to 200 meters, and in it's raised position had a similar peep aperature adjustable for ranges between 200 and 1400 meters. The rifle had a magazine cutoff device retained to allow single-round feeding, with the cartridges in the magazine held in reserve for massed attacks or "mad minutes". This particular example has just light wear and an attractive patina; much cleaner than you would expect for a service rifle almost 100 years old...... The visible wear consists of some light finish thinning, some high-edge wear in spots, and a few scratches and dings scattered about the wood. Everything is 100% functional and the action is smooth and slick. The bolt turns and locks into battery perfectly, the 2-stage combat trigger breaks nicely after the 1st stage, and the experimental-type rear ladder-style sight snaps into position up or down. All of the controls on this rifle are in perfect working order, and all you need is ammo to take it out and shoot it. This is a scarce rifle as only a relative few were made to start with, and many were destroyed or lost during WW2. This unique Lee Enfield would make a great addition to any military weapons collection and an excellent shooter for someone that shoots vintage military rifles for pleasure or in competition.
