**SOLD** Antique Beautiful Side by Side Combination gun with a .56 Caliber Cap & Ball Rifled Barrel and 14 to 15 Gauge Smoothbore **SOLD**
Description: This is certainly an antique weapon we do not see very often at all! This is a totally unmarked German or European side by side combination gun with 31 & 3/8ths" inch octagon barrels, one rifled barrel in .56 caliber and one smoothbore barrel that falls between 14 and 15 gauge in size. This muzzle-loading combo gun is a cap and ball arrangement with a very well made stock and set of side locks. It might have originally been a flintlock of some sort, as both lock plates have external flat v-shaped springs on them that don't seem to do anything but would be properly located for applying pressure to the flashpan frizzen (cover). When it was converted we have no way to know, only that it appears to have been done a very long time ago. While there is no maker markings visible on the exterior nor under the barrels, and the gun lakcs engraving everywhere except for the extremely wide blued steel triggerguard, it was most likely made as a "guild gun" by someone apprenticing back in the 1840's or so. The original stock is very well made and robust in size, with finely checkered patterns on the forearm and the wrist. It is a very solid stock, free from any cracks, repairs, or major dings/damage. The stock is fit with steel hardware including the buttplate and forend tip, both of which are finely shaped with designs and some nicely accomplished engraving. The barrels can be removed by simply pushing out the barrel wedge in the forearm and removing the screw at the rear tang, allowing the barrels to lift upward from the muzzle and unhooking under the rear section by the locks. Also of not is the patchbox, ammunition compartment on the right side of the buttstock. There is a wooden door that operates via a push button at the rear that allows the door to slide out past the buttplate or removed completely. As far as function goes both locks are in perfect working order. Both hammers still have both the half-cock and full-cock notches intact and the triggers will only function from full-cock, What appears to be the original ramrod or period replacement ramrod is still with the gun, and slides in and out tightly within the provisions under the barrels. The sights on this double rifle/shotgun consist of a an elongated silver bead at the front and a nicely sculpted rear sight blade attached to the center rib of the barrel via a screw. The original nipples are still intact on both barrels, although they look narrower in size than the typical #11 size you see regularly today. Interestingly enough, if we had the proper nipples and ammunition//shot for this double barrel we have no doubt that it will still function very reliably and pretty accurately. This really is one hell of a neat weapon that would be a great addition to any antique weapons collection in addition to being a superb decorator/wall hanger. This was most certainly a first class weapon when it was made new and still shows a lot of class and some very pretty design elements you don't often see on un-named doubles of this sort. As an antique, this double barrel combination rifle/shotgun can be shipped directly to the buyer's home, no FFL needed!
