Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Extremely Rare Westley Richards, Birmingham, England 8 Bore Percussion Double Barrel Dangerous Game Rifle with Fully Rifled Barrels & Gujarat, India Markings, .84 Cal, mfg. circa 1860. This is an extraordinary example of a true purpose built Victorian elephant gun by one of the greatest makers of all time. Most of the early muzzleloading era elephant guns were nothing more than cut down large bore duck guns repurposed to fire massive lead balls. Smoothbores were common as they were quicker and easier to reload on horseback and produced less recoil than a rifled bore. This double rifle would have been made to order for an English sportsman or hunter traveling to India during the British Raj and it's lack of embellishments only reflects the purity of the gun's intended purpose. Incredibly it remains in wonderful untouched condition throughout and is 100% original as manufactured. The Birmingham proofed Damascus barrels measure 21 7/8" long (factory length, not cut!) and feature a dovetailed iron blade front sight with standing leaf rear sight. The inside diameter of the bores measure approximately .845" across the lands and .895" across the grooves. Both locks are inscribed "WESTLEY RICHARDS" with "LONDON" on the upper rib. The metal has a smooth dark plum patina overall with the barrels showing approximately 70% thinned Damascus pattern. The stock features a checkered wrist with short forearm and retains a pleasing untouched finish. There are a couple short stable hairline cracks just behind the barrel tang with some minor edge chipping along the forearm and a tight 1 1/2" crack above the wedge on the right side. The iron buttplate is marked with the number "50" in Gujarati which would suggest the rifle spent some time in the Indian sate of Gujarat. Original iron triggerguard, patchbox, barrel wedge, forend tip, ramrod pipe, and sling swivel eyes. Wonderful robust ebony ramrod with brass tip and worm. Both hammers are matching originals with clean original nipples. Both action are crisp and function perfectly. They feature a mechanical half cock position with external stalking safeties which all function properly. The fully rifled bores feature remarkably sharp four-groove rifling front to back with typical light blackpowder frosting and fine pinprick pitting throughout. They are very clean overall and should prove quite serviceable if one ever chose to fire this beast. The barrels are thick walled with no dents and perfect original ribs. The rifle weighs 10 lbs 4 oz. This is a very special opportunity to own an incredibly unique big bore double rifle which can truly be considered the rarest of the rare. Finding a quality factory built double barrel elephant rifle from the mid 19th century is just about unheard of! A most exciting and impressive centerpiece for any collection.
