Greener 8 Bore Double Hammer Rifle, produced in 1892, is a true masterpiece from one of England’s most renowned gunmakers. Designed for serious big game hunting, this colossal firearm epitomizes the power and craftsmanship associated with the Victorian safari era. It features a 24" double barrel with an 8-bore chambering, delivering massive firepower suited for large and dangerous game. With a total weight of 16 lbs 12.4 oz, this rifle offers immense stability when firing the heavy 8-bore cartridges, making it ideal for hunting at relatively close ranges. The gun is in fine condition, having been professionally refinished in London to high standards. The blued barrels retain most of their color, although the signature and engraving are slightly worn, a testament to the rifle’s storied history. The action and locks feature renewed case hardening, with engraving still crisp and clear. The checkered walnut stock, though showing some handling marks and a small chip behind the left lockplate, has been refinished with care and maintains a generally well-defined checkering pattern. This rifle's top lever, back-action hammer locks, and treble wedge fast action are all classic features of a Greener firearm. The barrels are engraved with foliage near the breech and the rib extension is beautifully scroll-engraved. The broad, raised solid rib is designed with standing express rear sights for 50 yards and folding leaves for 100 and 150 yards, inlaid with platinum and gold for quick sighting in hunting scenarios. The case-hardened action features Greener’s “Elephant” trademark on the watertable and is adorned with intricate border, bouquet, and scroll engravings, adding to the aesthetic appeal. The stock is made from finely figured walnut with a checkered pistol grip and forearm, and the rifle comes equipped with a rubber recoil pad. A casehardened sling mount is found on the underside of the butt, with the corresponding sling mount beneath the barrels, offering practicality for carrying such a substantial firearm. The rifle includes an Anson push-button forearm release. Retailed by Greener’s French agents, A. Guinard & Cie, and signed on the rib with their Paris address, this piece represents a rich history of gunmaking excellence and global appeal. The Birmingham black powder proof marks further authenticate the rifle’s heritage, and the Greener Elephant trademark on the barrels and watertable confirm its prestigious origins. This W.W. Greener 8 Bore Double Rifle is not only a formidable hunting tool but also a historical and collectible firearm, suitable for both the serious hunter and the distinguished collector.
