“H. Leue, Hofbuchsenmacher, Berlin” 7.8X57JR
Description: 7.8X57JR Double Rifle H. Leue, "Hofbuchsenmacher, Berlin" # 6058 German double rifle in 7.8X57JR caliber. Marked on the rib “H. Leue, Hofbuchsenmacher, Berlin”. This is quite a lovely rifle: in excellent original condition, nicely engraved and fitted with claw mount and scope. It has folding leaf iron sights as well. It is built on a Greener action with a Greener crossbolt, side safety, and double under lugs. It is tight as new and functions perfectly. The double triggers have adjustments for pull. The stock has excellent dimensions (14X1 ½ X2 ½) and has Buffalo horn trigger guard, grip-cap, and butt plate. The gun is also fitted with sling swivels and a spare cartridge trap for 4 rounds. I have shot this gun and find it give good hunting accuracy of 4” groups at 100 yards. All-n-all, a very nicely got-up rifle suitable for dear and other medium size game. This rifle is accompanied by a lovely leather take-down case and 5 boxes of ammunition. The 7.8X57JR was a very popular chambering at that time for sporting arms when it was loaded by Winchester at the time. Heinrich Leue (1837-1897) was a gunsmith in Prussia and recorded some patents for shotgun improvements in Belgium. He apprenticed under his uncle Heinrich Barella, who was a famous gunmaker. He attained the title of court gun maker (hofbuchsenmacher). He had a business arrangement with English gunmaker W. W. Greener. Leue represented Greener in Germany doing business as “W.W. Greener and Leue”. They shared patents and appear to have shared fabrication of some guns. After his death the business continued into the early twentieth century. Probably disbanding with the event of WWI. Price: $5,500.00 Curio/Relic: Yes Rifle Caliber: 8x57mmR Manufacturer: “H.
