Charles Lancaster 475 NE Double Rifle
Description: This is a very clean and tight safari double rifle from the British firm of Charles Lancaster. It is a boxlock action, and the serial number indicates a 1927 build. When I first acquired this rifle I took it to Griffin & Howe, where they disassembled, cleaned, and re-oiled the mechanisms. The ribs were resoldered and the barrel set was rust blued. This was done at a cost of just under $2,000; the receipt will be included in the sale. The barrels are very good, with strong rifling. By 1927, the Cordite era was past, so this rifle probably saw little or no Cordite use. The flats are marked Cordite 75 480 MAX, and 475 3 1/4. The barrels are marked Charles Lancaster. and 99 Mount Street Berkeley Square London. Both sides of the receiver are marked Charles Lancaster. The 475 NE is one of the easiest of the double rifle calibers to load for. The 475 3 1/4 is simply a 450 NE opened up to .476. 450 NE brass is plentiful and cheap, so practice shooting or local hunting can be done using these loads. For proper headstamp, 475 NE brass is still available from a number of sources. The 475 NE handles a 480 or 500gr bullet at about 2,125 fps; on par with the popular 470 NE, The rifle has 26" barrels, a 15" LOP over a leather pad, and weighs a proper 10.6 lbs. It has a push-button forend release, cocking indicator, and barrel mounted sling mount. The rifle is clean, tight, and traditional. A set of new reloading dies will be included with the sale. This rifle is ready to hunt, and priced $3,000-$5,000 or more under market value. SOLD |
