Carl Stover Custom Mauser Model 1909 Argentine 338 Win Mag w/Leupold Scope
Description: This is a very nice custom rifle built on the tried and true Mauser Model 98 action. It is likely a Model 1909 Argentine Mauser made by DWM after World War I. After World War II, many countries sold their older bolt action rifles so as to equip their armed forces with newer semi- or full-auto weapons. The rifle here was sold onto the civilian market and was later taken to a local, well-known gunsmith by the name of Carl Stover located in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee. He customized it, replacing the original barrel with a new, 24-inch long version and chambered it for the popular .338 Win Mag. He replaced the original Mauser safety with a Mark II type safety and flattened and stippled one side of the bolt knob. Stover also drilled and tapped the receiver for scope mounts. A nice custom stock was fitted which has a beautiful dark finish. There are two recoil bracing Magnum Crossbolts in the stock which a is customary feature for magnum-chambered bolt guns to reduce the chances of the stock failing under repeated firings. The butt has a ventilated recoil pad. The rifle currently sports a Leupold 1.5-5x20mm scope. Most importantly, the original trigger system has been replaced with a Timney style trigger system. The rifle itself is in excellent condition. The bluing is very nice with no visible rust or pitting. The bolt has been elegantly jeweled. The bore is very clear with good rifling and no rust or pitting is present. The magazine holds three cartridges so total capacity is four rounds. This Custom Mauser would make an excellent hunting rifle.
