Colt Model 1855 Revolving Military Rifle
Description: This is a 5-shot .56 Caliber Colt Military Rifle with 31 & 5/16" inches long barrel. It was manufactured for military use prior to, and during the American Civil War (1856 to 1864). This example is not U.S. marked (very rare) and was probably a private purchase by a state militia or individual soldier. There were around 9,000 total of these revolving rifles and rifled muskets manufactured. It must have been very risky to fire one of these while holding on to the forearm as sometimes more than one cylinder would discharge at the same time if not carefully loaded; something that would have been very hard to do during the heat of battle. The condition is typical for this model . There is no original blue finish left on the metal surfaces. The metal parts have turned to a gray/brown patina which appears uniform from the buttplate to the muzzle. The smooth bore of the barrel is average with some pitting, but no bulges or dents. The original Walnut stock set is sound, and has had a brass star and quarter moon inlaid by a previous owner into the left hand side of the buttstock. The action still works except for the missing "half cock" hammer position, and seems to be "in-time". The trigger works properly and breaks cleanly. The loading lever also still functions properly and locks up into position under the forearm. These Colt Model 1855 Revolving Military Rifles are such a unqiue design they are quite the conversation piece. The neat looks of this long gun combined with the interesting Civil War history of this weapon make it quite an interesting addition to any antique weapons collection. This Colt would also make a cool decorator, quite different from the single shot muzzle-loading long rifles often used for that purpose.
