Description: RARE COLT Model 1855 1st Model Revolving Rifle FULL STOCK Elisha K. Root 36 Pre-CIVIL WAR Repeating Rifle! Here we present an antique Colt 1855 First Model Revolving Rifle, manufactured circa 1855 in Hartford, Connecticut. Estimated about 1,000 made but could be fewer. This bears much resemblance to the “Root” pocket revolver (named for inventor and machinist and Colt’s superintendent and later president Elisha K. Root), and is essentially a scaled up version of the same. This first iteration is most readily differentiated from later ones by the oiler assembly on the left side of the barrel assembly as well as the spurs on either side of the trigger guard bow. This one features a full-length forestock as well as a decorative groove just forward of the front sight. 6-shot cylinder in .36 caliber. Small trap in the butt plate and stock. This is the second-longest barrel at 27”. Serial number 177. This is a true rarity in Colt collecting. It is a fantastic example of one of the few working and successful attempts of the period to produce a repeating rifle before the advent of the Henry and Spencer and other lever actions. The overall condition is very good. Polished bright. The action is excellent and the cylinder indexes well. The bore is in good condition, patinated with strong rifling. The stock is solid and has been refinished. A very nice piece! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 27 inches.
