Sharpshooter's Rifle (J. B. Smith Civil War Era)
Description: This is a J. B. Smith, Civil War era, sharpshooter's rifle. The octagonal barrel is marked "J. B. Smith Maker, Northfield, VT, Warranted Gain-Twist, Cast Steel" with the number "18" before the legend, and the number "100" after. It has an engraved "Sheldon" sidelock and an engraved hammer. The tock is American walnut. The cantilever sight extends 4" behind the uncocked hammer. It features double set triggers. The brass hardware and German silver inlays accent this beautiful rifle. The octagonal barrel measures 28 1/4 inches. The end of the barrel has four holes to accommodate a "false muzzle" used in loading the rifle, so as not to damage the rifliong with the ramrod. This rifle could have been used by one of the Vermont men in Company F, First united States Sharpshooters, which was the first shorpshooter company mustered into service on September 13, 1861, at Randolph, VT. Weight of this rifle is 10 lbs. 8 oz. Condition is excellent. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: J. B. Smith Maker Model: Sharpshooter's Rifle Caliber Info: .36 Condition: Excellent |
