Scarce Remington Manufactured M1863 Rifle Musket
Description: SCARCE U.S. MODEL 1863 .58 CALIBER RIFLE MUSKET MADE BY REMINGTON IN 1865 . This is the standard Model 1863 rifle musket with the screw clamp type bands. Remington was one of the very few contractors to make this model other than Springfield Armory. The others were Jenks and SN&WTC making a few. This model is probably the hardest to find of all antique Remington military arms. This is a Very Good condition rifle musket on the NRA Antique Scale*. The color casehardening on the lock and hammer has “silvered” with muted tones left of the original finish. There is very light corrosion on the tip of the lock. The bore is bright and sharp with little pitting; likely seldom if ever fired other than for manufacture and for English proof. Barrel exterior is bright and smooth with random pits here and there. This is further supported by the lack of pitting around the cone. The barrel does exhibit a light “orange peel” appearance that is apparent on the photo showing the proof marks. This doesn’t become apparent until you “look into the metal”. The hypothesis is a light coat of rust left this pattern after the cleaning occurred. The bluing on the trigger and cone is very strong; the rear sight bluing is worn except in protected places. The tulip head, straight shank ramrod is correct. Piece has been cleaned overall. Stock may have the occasional bump and bruise here and there but nothing major for a 158 year old rifle. The lockplate is marked 1865/ REMINGTON’S/ILION, NY; inspector initial L and large eagle over U.S. Full eagle on the barrel bolster. The barrel is also dated 1865. The opposite stock flat has a script EMC cartouche at the front for Edwin McCue, and OWA at the rear is from Orville W. Ainsworth, a prolific inspector of Civil War contract arms, but best known for his work on early Colt SAAs. Remington was a major player in Civil War small arms, being the principal supplier of .44 and .36 caliber revolves for the Army and Navy. They also had, as a lower priority, contacts for 10,000 of the well known Model 1862 “Zouave” rifle. In August 1863 Remington signed a contract for 20,000 Model 1863 rifle muskets, and in December signed a second contract for 20,000 more. During 1864 some 12,000 were delivered, 25,000 during 1865 and 1,000 in early 1866. Most undelivered arms contracts were canceled as soon as the war ended, but Remington’s importance to the war effort won special dispensation to have their full quota accepted. Few, if any of the Remington made Model 1863 rifle muskets were issued during the war. Most apparently were sold off circa 1866-1870 with a large number going to France for the Franco-Prussian war. This one has number 361 stamped on the left side of the butt in a European looking font. It also has a British proof mark on the left barrel flat, indicating it passed through England at some time. The Remington Model 1863’s most seen in this country seem to have British proofs. Reportedly some Remington or Jenks made M1863s ended up in the hands of the Fenian rebels seeking to overthrow British rule in Canada circa 1866-1870, but those are marked “IN” on the left stock flat and lack federal inspector cartouches. A prize for a Remington collector, or anyone interested in U.S. martial longarms. *NRA Antique Very Good: All original parts, none to 30 percent original finish; original metal surfaces smooth with all the edges sharp; clear lettering, numerals and design on metal; wood slightly scratched, bruised or minor cracks repaired, in good working order $3750 plus shipping.
