Rare Civil War US Model 1863 Percussion Rifle-Musket Made By Parkers' Snow & Co.
Description: During the Civil War, almost 800,000 of the .58 caliber US Model 1861 and Model 1863 rifle-muskets were produced by the Springfield Armory and 32 private subcontactors. One of those subcontractors was Parker, Snow & Company located in Meriden, Conn. During 1863 and 1964, Parker Snow produced 15,000 Model 1863 rifle-muskets to fill a contract awarded to them by the US military. The right side lock plate on these rifles is marked "Parkers' Snow & Co./Meriden, Conn." and the date "1864". However, prior to being awarded that contract, Parker Snow also produced 5,502 rifles to fill the James Mulholland contract of 1861. Mulholland was awarded a contract by the US military but had no manufacturing capability. Mulholland turned to Parker Snow to have the contract filled. Parker Snow produced the Mulholland rifles and the right side lock plate on those is dated "1863" along with the name "Parkers' Snow & Co./Meriden, Conn." Featured here is one of those rare Parker Snow rifle-muskets with the 1863 date. The rifle is in outstanding condition. It is unaltered in its original muzzle loading and percussion cap design. All the parts appear to be original, as none of the screws have been tampered with. The mechanics of the rifle are tight and work properly. The barrel's .58 caliber bore shows some frosting but has strong rifling with no damage to the muzzle. The lock plate is clearly stamped "1863" along with "Parkers' Snow & Co./Meriden, Conn." and the eagle over "US". The top of the barrel just ahead of the tang is stamped "1863" and the left side of the barrel is stamped with the US Ordinance acceptance mark of the eagle's head under "VP". The top of the butt plate is stamped "US". Each of the three barrel bands are stamped with a "U" on the right side. The rear sight is the two leaf design. The fixed sight is for 100 yards and the two folding leaves are stamped "3" and "5" for 300 and 500 yards, respectively. It has the original ramrod. The butt plate, trigger guard, and barrel are developing a nice plum-brown petina. The wood on this rifle is in very good condition with no cracks or repairs and few dents. It has not been sanded or refinished. There are two inspector's cartouch stamps on the flat of the stock on the left side. One is "EHB", possibly for Edwin H. Perry, who inspected rifles at Parkers Snow. The other cartouche may to be "CLW" but it is not as deeply stamped. This rifle-musket is being sold as a collector's antique and should not be fired. FIring this fine firearm might not only damage it but potentially injure the shooter and bystanders. The seller of this rifle does not accept any responsibilty for any injury or damage caused by the firing or misuse of this firearm. This rifle-musket is classified as an antique by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and, as such, can be shipped directly to the buyer's address. However, it is up to the buyer to make sure he/she is in compliance with any state and local restrictions or licensing. This is a long, heavy rifle, so add $90 for insured shipping within the continental United States and $100 to Alaska via USPS Ground Advantage mail. If you want it shipped via USPS Priority Mail for faster delivery the shipping cost will be higher. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Antique: Yes |
