Rare Civil War Imported M1857/59 Spanish Enfield Rifle
Description: I am offering a rare Civil War imported M1857/59 Spanish Enfield 2 band Rifle. These rifles are easily identified by the clamped on Enfield type rear sight. There is quite a bit of discussion relative to these rifles in the book, "European Arms in the Civil War ". There is apparently documentation to show that there were several instances where these rifles were purchased by the Confederacy. This rifle may have been in the group that entered the country in late 1863 or 1864. Supposedly the serial numbers in that group ranged in the mid 3000s to mid 4000's. This rifle is serial number "4208". This number appears on the lock plate in back of the hammer. A proofmark appears in front of the hammer with a date of "1863" below it. The same proof mark also appears on the breech. In addition there is a number that looks like "495" stamped above it. That number is in a style different than the numbers of the serial number and I do not know the significance of it. The only other markings I could find on the rifle were a "2" on the face of the upper band and a "3" on the face of the lower band. Overall the rifle is in good condition. The stock shows minor handling dings and possibly could have been refinished at some time. The barrel has a salt and pepper patina and it may have been cleaned at some point. The barrel bands and end cap have a matching thick brown patina. The bore is shiny with distinct rifling and some scattered roughness. The rear sight is functional. The action works properly. Both sling swivels are present. The barrel is full length at 33". The bore measures about a .58 cal.. These Spanish Enfields are kind of rare and with the information available this could have been a Confederate Rifle? SOLD Antique: Yes |
