Norwich Contract US Model 1861 Rifle Musket
American Civil War
.58 caliber. 40" round barrel. SN: NSN. Bright finish, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading percussion military rifle musket the the barrel retained by three flat, spring retained barrel band. Lock marked U.S./NORWICH and with a {Spread-Winged Eagle} forward of the hammer and dated 1863 at the tail. Breech with no visible date. Left angled breech flat with weak V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs. No visible cartouche on the stock flat. The rifle musket retains the correct 1861 pattern leaf rear sight, the combination musket front sight and socket bayonet lug, both sling swivels and a full-length swelled-shank tulip head ramrod. Also included is a partial period musket sling.
Condition Report
VERY Good. Bore good, moderately oxidized with some light pitting and visible rifling. Metal cleaned with dull pewter patina and scattered surface oxidation with some discoloration and scattered pitting, particularly at the breech. Markings on lock clear, a little weak on barrel, not present on stock. Lock remains mechanically functional. Stock with moderate wear, sanded with rounded edges and showing scattered bumps and dings.
