NEW JERSEY Marked Antique Belgian “CARABINE à TIGE” 1846 Pattern Rifle CIVIL WAR Percussion Musket Made in LIEGE, BELGIUM
Description: NEW JERSEY Marked Antique Belgian “CARABINE à TIGE” 1846 Pattern Rifle CIVIL WAR Percussion Musket Made in LIEGE, BELGIUM Here we present an antique New Jersey Marked Belgian “Carabine à Tige” 1846 Pattern Rifle, manufactured circa the late 1840s in Liege, Belgium patterned after the French Model 1846 “Carabine à Tige”. In 1837, the French military adopted the percussion ignition system for their small arms. The first newly produced percussion arm to be manufactured by the French was the Model 1837 Delvigne-Pontcharra “Sharp Shooter’s Carbine”. In 1840, the French began the process of updating their stocks of older flintlock weapons to percussion. At the same time, they adopted a new pattern of light infantry rifle, the Model 1840, known as the “Carbine de Munition”. In 1846, the French abandoned Delvigne’s chambered breech design in favor of the Thouvenin “pillar breech” system. These arms were known as the Carbine à Tige and relied upon a pillar in the breech to assist with the mechanical engagement of the bullet with the rifling. This example is the Belgian copy of the French rifle. This rifle is also the prototypical Continental Rifled Musket that was imported to the Confederacy during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example sports a solid stock with an average amount of wear. A cartouche remnant is present on the left stock flat. Original brown barrel patina. Legible markings. “NJ” and a liege proof are marked on the left side of the barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33-3/8 inches. Caliber: .70 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $2000 #228539 SOLD Antique: Yes |
