M-1861, Robinson Contract Musket,1863, Confederate Use ?
Description: This musket is from the first 1863 contract of 12,000 to E. Robinson, New York. Later contracts, up to 1865 brought the total made by Robinson to 30,000 arms. They were made in the pattern of the M-1861 Springfield, 40” inch .58 Cal. Barrel. This smooth bore musket remains mostly original with a very uniform and pleasing patina appearance. The “V / P” barrel proof is light but visible while the “G.E.C.” (George E. Chamberlin) inspectors’ proof is strong. The ramrod is the correct style with worn threads to secure it into the stock. Ramrods threads are usually worn and frequently missing because of the habit of sticking the rod into the ground between shots. The lock remains strong and fully functional. The rear sight is a newer replacement for the missing original. Most interesting are the non-standard sling loops. The front loop appears to be a saber scabbard ring, and the rear is formed from wire. Both have patina matching the musket. This type of improvisation are typical field repairs by troops with no spare parts supply, Confederate Soldiers. This is a rare 1863 dated E. Robinson musket that would enhance any Civil War collection.
