Excellent Model 1863 U.S. J. P. Lindsay Double Rifle Musket

Description:
This is an excellent condition U.S. Model 1863 Lindsay Patent Double Rifle Musket. About 1,000 of these unique two-shot rifle-muskets were manufactured circa 1863-1864 with all purchased by the federal government. The gun took two full charges in its single muzzle loaded barrel, one on top of the other, fired separately using double hammers and a single trigger. These guns appear to have seen some limited sevice in the Civil War and used examples are quite often found with shattered stock wrists that occurred from excessive recoil if both loads accidentally fired at the same time. This example appears to be in unfired unissued condition with perfect deep Lindsay Patent stamps on the breech of the barrel, two crisp cartouches on the left stock flat, bright arsenal polished finish on the action, barrel bands and trigger guard, and a soft semi-bright finish to the barrel. Action works perfectly and the bore is mint. Rear sight and nipple retain much original blue. The fine walnut stock retains its original untouched factory oil finish with very sharp edges, just a few minor pressure dings and scrapes on the left counter plane. Musket has all original fine screws and original ramrod. The Lindsay two-shot musket is one of the most unusual federal issued Civil War longarms and with limited production it is a relatively scarce weapon lacking from most Civil War longarm collections.
