CSA Assembled Model 1855 Harpers Ferry Rifle Dated 1861
Description: This is a scarce U.S. Model 1855 2-band iron mounted .58 caliber rifle fitted with Maynard Tape Primer lock and dated 1861 on lock and barrel. These iron mounted guns were manufactured only at the U.S. Harper's Ferry National Armory from mid-1859 to April 1861. Total production was 5,151. The Arsenal was captured and burned by Confederate forces on April 18, 1861. At that time only 420 rifles dated 1861 had been completed. All parts already manufactured were collected and sent to CSA arsenals to be assembled in to complete guns for issue to CSA forces. This appears to be one of the guns assembled by the Confederacy from those captured parts. This 1861 dated example bears no Federal inspection cartouches on the stock (as would be correct for a CSA assembled piece) and the patchbox is not fitted with a spare nipple as were the Harper's Ferry manufactured guns. The forward lock screw escutcheon washer is iron while the rear one is brass and is most likely a captured left over part from the earlier brass mounted '55 rifles. These anomalies from the standard Harpers Ferry '55 rifle production indicate to me that this is a CSA assembled piece from the parts captured from the April 1861 raid on the arsenal. This rifle is in very fine condition for a CSA assembled example. All of the iron is smooth and semi-bright, just a little blackened tarnish spots on the hammer. All markings are sharp and clear with the exception of the 1861 barrel date which is worn due to period cleaning of the breech, but still discernable as an 1861 date. The rifled bore is excellent with sharp and bright clean rifling all the way down. The lock machanics are like new including a fully functional Maynard tape primed system and includes a complete roll of original Maynard tape primers. The dark walnut stock retains its original oil finish and does not appear to have been sanded as all of the mounts fit the stock properly and do not stand above the level of the wood. The ramrod channel is fine and lock and counter plane contours are fairly sharp. Rifle retains its correct pattern rear sight with 'R' for 'Rifle' stamped on each sight leaf. Sight and nipple retain correct blue finish. All parts are original to the gun including screws, both sling swivels, and ramrod. These 1861 dated rifles are scarce in any condition and this one is especially desirable in this nice untouched condition with definite Confederate assembly.attributes. . SOLD Antique: Yes |
