1 of 3007; Scarce Rifle Manufactured in Early 1865
Description: CIVIL WAR U.S. Springfield JOSLYN Metallic Breech Loading Rifle w/BAYONET 1 of 3007; Scarce Rifle Manufactured in Early 1865 Here we present an Scarce Antique Springfield Armory made Joslyn Breech Loading Rifle, made circa early 1865 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Benjamin Franklin Joslyn was the inventor, holding over 25 firearms patents. Early in the Civil War, 8,000 cavalry carbines were purchased by the Union and they all saw service, being heavily allocated to cavalry regiments such as the 4th and 8th Indiana, 19th New York, 13th Tennessee, 9th Pennsylvania, 3rd West Virginia, 2nd Wisconsin, 1st Nebraska, 1st Nevada and 11th Ohio. As a result of his success with the carbine, the federal government ordered 3,000 of his breech-loading actions in order to build the U.S. National armory made breech-loading rifles. These were made for the proprietary cartridge called the 50-60-450 Joslyn Rimfire. This pre-dates the Allin conversion and some of these 3,007 rifles are suspected to have been issued and used just before the end of the American Civil War. These Joslyn rifles were the first breech loading metallic cartridge rifles manufactured at a U.S. national armory. 3,007 were assembled in January to June of 1865 utilizing breech units supplied by the Joslyn Firearms Company. 1,600, were converted for the .50-70 Government cartridge and sold to the French during the Franco-Prussian War. This is one of the remaining 1407 left in its original state. The overall condition is good+. Patina throughout. The action is strong. The hammer appears to be a modified replacement from something else. The rear sight is a modern replacement. The bore is dim with good rifling. There is a small hole in the underside of the stock between the rear barrel band and the front of the trigger guard. The stock has been refinished and remains solid. The numbers on the breech block and the receiver tang match. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 35-1/2 inches. Caliber: .50 Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
