CIVIL WAR PRUSSIAN Antique POTSDAM Model 1809 Percussion CONVERSION Musket
“CS” Marked Made Circa 1832 at the Armory at SUHL
Description: CIVIL WAR PRUSSIAN Antique POTSDAM Model 1809 Percussion CONVERSION Musket “CS” Marked Made Circa 1832 at the Armory at SUHL Here we present an antique Percussion Prussian Potsdam Model 1809 Musket, manufactured circa 1832 at the Prussian armory at Suhl. The Potzdam musket was the standard infantry weapon of the Royal Prussian Army from the 18th century until the military reforms of the 1840s. Four models were produced at Potsdam, including the Model 1723, the Model 1740, the Model 1809, as is this one, and the Model 1831. Records show that the U.S. Ordnance Department purchased approximately 165,000 Prussian arms of which 100,300 were identified as smoothbores. All of the shipments arrived in late 1861 through early 1862 when the need for arms was most urgent. There were no known Confederate contract purchases of this particular model musket, although their acquisitions through battlefield capture is most likely. The Model 1809 was originally made in the flintlock format, with production after 1831 changing the name to the Model 1809/31 and shifting to the more modern and reliable percussion firing system. This musket would have been used in Prussian conflicts during the 1840s and 50s, including the Egyptian-Ottoman War, the Greater Poland Uprising, the Revolutions of 1848, and the First Schleswig War, before being sold to the United States government in the first years of the American Civil War. Though thoroughly obsolete, both the Union and the Confederacy were desperate for small arms as the South had little capability to make their own and the North had to scramble to ramp up their own production. The overall condition is good. Robust action. The bore is in good shape for its age and remains smooth. Very good, solid stock. Legible markings. “CS” is marked on the left barrel flat. “2076” is marked on the barrel and stock. The middle barrel band don’t not seat fully on the spring, and slides along the forend. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 41-1/4 inches. Caliber: .75 percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
