CIVIL WAR ELI WHITNEY ENFIELD Rifle-Musket Saber Bayonet .58 “Ihle” Antique 1 of 3500 Whitney Enfields with SWORD BAYONET
Description: CIVIL WAR ELI WHITNEY ENFIELD Rifle-Musket Saber Bayonet .58 “Ihle” Antique 1 of 3500 Whitney Enfields with SWORD BAYONET Here we present an antique Whitney Arms Co. Enfield Pattern Two Band Rifle-Musket, made circa 1859-62 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Enfield Pattern Rifle was the British Military Ordnance Board’s choice for adoption as the primary long arm in 1853. It was considered the apex European military gun of that time, introduced by the British War Department after several studies to improve the calibers and the dimensions of the previous models. However, it kept the same general appearance of the earlier pattern 1851. The overwhelming majority of P53 Enfield Rifles were made by commercial gun makers in Birmingham and London under contract, though there were some American firms who saw the Enfield very favorably and made their own, sometimes with old-new stock or even rejected British parts. Blunt and Whitney were examples of this. Whitney only manufactured around 3,500 of these Enfield pattern rifle-muskets with some variations. This is a Type IV, of which at least 336 and up to 500 were purchased by the US government through the Schuyler, Hartley, and Graham of New York. The overall condition is very good. Original finish. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition: reflective with strong rifling. The stock shows use and remains in great shape, especially for its age. There is the name “IHLE” marked into the left side of the butt stock near the butt plate. There were 9 soldiers who fought for the Union with this last name: 2 from Missouri, 2 from New York, 1 from Pennsylvania, 1 from West Virginia, 1 from Ohio, 1 from Wisconsin, and 1 musician from an unknown locale. The bayonet is in good condition. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33 inches. Caliber: .58 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $2800 #227899 SOLD Antique: Yes |
