CIVIL WAR Antique SPRINGFIELD US M1863 Musket
Description: CIVIL WAR Antique SPRINGFIELD US M1863 Musket Dated “1864” & Cut Down to Hunt Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1863 Musket, made by Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1864. The M1863 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1863 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike solid, round ball. This specimen was sold on the surplus market after the Civil War and subsequently shortened to a handier length for hunting. The bore was made smooth and was almost certainly used as a shotgun. The original markings on the lock as well as the government inspector marks remain clear on the stock. The rear of the lock is dated “1864”. The lock is marked “EAGLE/U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. The overall condition is fair. The markings are legible. The original walnut stock has been shortened. This musket could use a barrel band to secure the barrel to the stock as currently it is on the barrel tang screw that holds it on. The bore is rough and caked with debris. The action on this musket is strong. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 31 inches. Caliber: .59 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $475 #7049 SOLD Antique: Yes |
