36" barrel "Egyptian" Sharps M1859 rifle - 8th Conn Vol markings
Description: Rare 36" length barrel Sharps rifle variant. Referred to as the "Egyptian" Sharps as there were 600 made by Sharps for the Egyptian government. The Egyptian government never paid so these were available as the Civil War broke out. The state of Connecticut purchased these rifles and were subsequently issued (at first) to the 1st & 2nd CV. Both those units were 3 month units and both saw the battle of Bull Run. Upon the mustering out of those units these Sharps rifles went to the 8th, 11th, and (I believe) the 14th Connecticut Volunteers. This rifle is complete and operates as it should. The stock has been sanded and a light coat of varnish has been applied. This looks nice and is well done, but would have been much better if it was left in its original state. The 8th and 11th marked their Sharps (and for that matter their M1855 Springfield muskets which were also issued to some companies) with 8CV on one line, and a company letter followed by a number on the line below that. the 11CV did the same. for some reason the 8CV stamping is upside down whereas the 11CV is right side up. In the picture section I have a clearer example of an 8CV marked Sharps rifle. That example picture is NOT this rifle and is marked as such. The example is included here as the marking on this rifle is not as clear due to the stock being sanded as mentioned. If you are aware of this mark, it is unmistakeable. The company letter and number cannot be made out but the 8CV can be identified. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Sharps |
