Description:
This is a U.S. Model 1847 Cavalry Musketton later altered to Artillery configuration. Production of the M1847 Cavalry Carbine began in 1847 with the entire production of 5,802 guns manufactured by the Springfield Armory through 1854. The guns were brass mounted and featured a captive ramrod secured to the barrel at the muzzle by either swivels or a chain device. All are .69 caliber smoothbore and fitted with a long saddle bar extending from the lock screw sideplate to the lower band with a large saddle ring. The gun has no sling swivels and does not take a bayonet. Soon after the guns were issued the Ordnance Department received numerous complaints from the field about the fragile captive ramrods and excessive recoil. Consequently, the guns were modified to include a ramrod retaining spoon spring in the stock and a third first safety notch was added to the tumbler to allow the guns to be carried in the saddle with a percussion cap on the cone. By the mid-1850s the guns were considered obsolete and not suited for cavalry service having been replaced with Sharps breech loading carbines. To get some further use out of the unwanted cavalry carbines the Ordnance Department altered 630 of the guns to "Artillery" models by removing the sling bar and ring and the captive ramrod swivels or chain. A bayonet stud was added under the barrel to accept the Model 1835 socket bayonet and sling swivels were added to the heel of the butt stock and lower band. All of the Artillery model alterations are present on this gun. The lock and barrel are dated 1851 with the barrel having the V, P, and eagle head proof stamps. The stock retains its original inspection cartouche on the left flat. The markings remain very crisp. The ron parts are smooth semi-bright clean steel. The brass mounts have a lovely uncleaned dark mustard color.
