Smith Carbine, Model 1857, 50 cal.
Description: Smith Civil War Carbine. Cal.50, # 7188. Collector quality. A very popular Civil War carbine made from 1857 to 1865. It fired a fixed cartridge with a rubber casing and is used by many re-enactors today. This carbine is in 95-98% original condition with the only negative being light handling dings on the wood. Probably never issued. Open breech shows no sign of being fired. Break open latch is stiff, probably from not being used. Tight, distinct hammer and trigger action. Original bluing on barrel and parts with receiver and hammer wearing the original case hardening. Barrel latch has some “freckling” in the bluing. There are a few slight spots or surface roughness about 2” down and to the right of the front sight. See pictures. Bore is excellent and in bright and shiny condition. Correct deep, easily read markings. Stock has a mint “TH” in an oval cartouche. Left side of receiver has saddle ring and vertically marked “ SMITHS PATENT/ JUNE22nd, 1857”. Above and to the right is “ADDRESS/POULTEY & TRIMBLE/BALTIMORE U.S.A.” Left rear of barrel has inspectors initials “LFR”. (not sure of L). Matching serial number on bottom of receiver and barrel breech. Stock is marked with inspector initials “JH” just in front of top of butt plate. Curved butt plate still has about 70% faded brown patina finish and the initial “W” on the bottom. Rear of trigger housing tang has same “W” inspector initial. Original finished wood has a number of light handling dings and dents but nothing serious. No cracks, chips or deep goughes. Carbine appears nicer in room lighting. Antique, no license required, shipped direct to buyer for $50. Bank check, cashiers check and money orders accepted. Personal checks also but held a few days until they clear. My listings are the last of my personal collection from many years. SOLD Antique: Yes |
