Sharps M1859 Carbine converted to .50-70 Centerfire
Description: Offered here is a very fine Sharps Model 1859 Civil War issued percussion carbine converted post-war to fire the .50-70 centerfire cartridge. After the Civil War the Ordnance Department decided to convert many of the turned in obsolete Sharps percussion carbines to .50-70 centerfire. The Sharps factory did the conversion work between 1867-1868 which included the installation of a new breech block with centerfire firing pin and cam operated cartridge extractor. Many of the original .52 caliber barrels were relined with a three groove .50 caliber liner which this example has. The guns were completely refurbished and refinished, re-blued and re-casehardened with worn stocks replaced with new stocks. This gun retains nearly all of its bright case colors on the action, buttplate and trigger bar. The screws are all near perfect with bright nitre blue finish. The original barrel serial numbered to the gun retains all of its original factory blue finish with a slight aged patina texture over top. Original sights are present. Bore is near perfect. Action is very tight and works perfectly. The stocks are medium brown colored walnut with a natural oil finish and strong lines showing only the very slightest handling wear; no chips, cracks or repairs. The left butt stock has a crisp DFC (David F. Clark) inspection cartouhce. The sadle bar and ring are correctly polished bright. The correct Sharps patent factory markings are all present and crisp. On most of these conversions the barrel markings were polished off, this one still has good barrel markings. Most of these converted Sharps carbines were issued to frontier Cavalry outfits and saw extensive hard use in the early Indian Wars period. The iconic .50-70 Sharps cartridge carbine was featured in both the original John Wayne True Grit movie and the recent remake with Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. Buyer pays shipping. Standard three day inspection period. e-mail me if you need more information. SOLD Antique: Yes |
