EXCELLENT BURNSIDE FIFTH MODEL PERCUSSION BREECH LOADING CARBINE
Description: This is an excellent example of a 5th Model, Burnside Carbine manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co., in Providence, Rhode Island, a .54 caliber percussion breachloding carbine popular with Cavalry troops during the Civil War. Designed by Civil War Major General Ambrose E. Burnside who is famous today for his military blunders and his distinctive facial hair, his carbine helped build his national fame and military career. Unfortunately for Burnside, his financial difficulties caused him to sell his interest in the company in June 1859 before he could benefit from lucrative government contracts. The Burnside Carbine was an important Union Cavalry carbine. the Ordnance Department purchased 43,0000 5th Models in 1863-1865. They are known to have been issued to at least 45 Union cavalary units including the 1st Michigan, 3rd Indiana, 5th, 6th, 7th Ohio, 1st New Jersey, 3rd West Virginia, 3rd, 14th, 18th Prennsylvania, 2nd, 12th, 14th, 16th Illinois, as well as 7 Confederate units. They were the third most widely used carbines and were only less widely issued than the Sharps and Spencer carbines. The cartridge of the Burnside is also unusual, having either a copper casing or a tapered foil casing. The 5th Model carbine is distinguished from earlier models by the presence of a guide screw hole in the center of the right side of the frame. The frame, hammer, lever release, barrel band and buttplate are casehardened and the remaining parts are blue. The top of the frame is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT / MODEL OF 1864" over the serial number. The matching serial number is marked on the top of the breech block. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "CAST STEEL 1864" and the lock is marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co. / PROVIDNECE, R.I." There is a small "F" sub-inspectors mark on the top breech end of the barrel, an "H" on the left front of the frame and lower tang, a "C" on the hammer, saddle ring bar base, and upper tang, an "L" on the bottom of the lever assembly and on the buttplate, and an "HH" on the lever assembly. Pinched blade front and two folding leaf rear sights marked "1", "3", and "5" for 100, 300 and 500 yards, respectively. Saddle ring bar and ring on the left side of the receiver. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with an iron carbine buttplate and sling swivel. The stock has small three letter inspection stamps on the bottom rear of the forearm and on the butt directly ahead of the buttplate tang. The Ordnance inspector and/or sub-inspector's rectangular script cartouche is stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. Excellent condition. As you're considering this gun, remember the sage advice of a late gun collecting friend of mine, “you only ever regret the guns you didn’t buy,” “where are you going to find another one,” and “you can make more money tomorrow.” Please also remember, whatever you’re thinking of offering, “I’ve got more than that in it!” As my wise old gentleman friend also said, "I've never paid too much for a gun. I've bought some guns too soon, but I've never paid too much for a gun. SOLD Antique: Yes Serial Number: 7951 |
