ACW Antique BURNSIDE-SPENCER Patent CARBINE M1865 Converted to .45-70 GOVT
Frontier Conversion of a Former US Cavalry Gun
Description: ACW Antique BURNSIDE-SPENCER Patent CARBINE M1865 Converted to .45-70 GOVT Frontier Conversion of a Former US Cavalry Gun Here we present an antique U.S. Burnside Contract Spencer Model 1865 Carbine, made circa 1865 by contract by the Burnside Rifle Company in Providence, Rhode Island. The Spencer was a very successful carbine that was desirable on Civil War battlefields due to its handy size, accuracy, and rate of fire. The magazine tube in the butt holds 7 shots and a captured Confederate soldier is quoted as saying that you “load in the morning and fire all day!” The inventor, Christian Spencer, had the unique opportunity to personally instruct President Abraham Lincoln as he test-fired the rifle, resulting in more military sales. This specimen is one of the Burnside Contract, making it scarcer than those made by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company. Out of the 34,000 made by Burnside, over 30,000 were purchased by the U.S. government. This one has been through a rudimentary conversion from the Spencer rimfire cartridge to .45-70 GOVT. This is likely due to the dearth of available ammunition for the .50 Caliber Spencer. The barrel was replaced as well as the forearm and the saddle ring bar has been removed. We believe this was intended to operate as a single shot firearm in its converted form. The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore only has the slightest suggestion of rifling remaining and is basically smoothbore. Solid stock with an above average amount of wear, containing a few stable small crack and dents and dings from use. The tubular magazine spring is absent. The barrel and forearm show movement at the frame as it is not staked or brazed to the receiver at present. This rifle looks like it has been through the ringer and is a good example of the type of hard-use these guns got on the Frontier. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 27-3/4 inches. Caliber: .45-70 GOVT Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
