People abuse the term "Rare" and it gets used all the time and waters down the true meaning of rare. This gun is beyond rare, to the point of being only one of a kind. This is a Burgess wrist slide action rifle that never made it to a full production offering in a Burgess Patent. This has to be a prototype, as it is the only one known to exist. It has 2 barrels, one round, the other octagon, both chambered in 44-40. This rifle is a functioning and shooting example of Burgess ingenuity. It is a takedown version of a shotgun pattern that Andrew Burgess designed and patented when he had his own rifle manufacturing facility in Buffalo, New York.

Andrew Burgess is largely an unknown rifle designer that is only 2nd to Jonathan Browning in his inventive genius. This gun is one of those that is unheard of and quite historic in regards to gun devlopment in the 19th century. This is a chance to own a real novelty and it has been written about in "Guns" magazine twice and this adds to the authenticity and unique provenance of this rifle. The rifle is a repeating firearm which is activated by the pistol grip that slides rearward to work the action to load, fire and reload the gun.

The rifle remains in great original condition with the rarity not found in many guns at all. It is an antique and also as it is a prototype, it has no manufacturing name or date on it, but was made in his gun manufacturing facility between 1893 and 1899.

Andrew Burgess began an apprenticeship with Matthew Brady in 1855. Burgess was as much of a photographer of the War Between the States as Brady was and he went on to photograph throughout Mexico and Europe, as well as running the Brady gallery as a partner. It is speculated that during his stint as a photographer during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) Burgess developed an interest in firearm design. His first patent was granted Sept. 19, 1871, for an improvement on the Peabody rifle. 800 patents later, he became one of the most prolific gun designers in American history.
