RARE Post CIVIL WAR MERRIMACK No 38 Ballard Carbine
Description: RARE Post CIVIL WAR MERRIMACK No 38 Ballard Carbine One of Only 2,200 Rifles Made from 1867-1869 Here we present an antique Merrimack Arms & Mfg. Co. Ballard Carbine, made in 1867. The Ballard is an interesting rifle in that it began its career during the American Civil War, when it was produced in relatively small numbers (only about 24,000 from 1862-1873) by five different manufacturers. It was ultimately made a commercial success when made into one of the staples of the Marlin Company. Charles H. Ballard invented the rifle and the famed arms agents Merwin & Bray secured government contracts and lined up the firearms companies to make them. This example is one of only 2,200. With the Civil War over, arms inventors, makers and agents were hurting, and Merwin & Bray were no exception. The powerhouse arms dealers during the war, the company dissolved in 1866 and Edward Bray sold the company along with all the tooling. This carbine features a long, octagonal barrel, chambered for the .38 rimfire cartridge. Its serial number is 18284, making this the 284th Ballard off the Merrimack line, since their serial numbering only went from 18000 to 20300. The front sight is a blade and the rear sight a buckhorn. The receiver tang is cut for a tang peep sight. The hammer was also made to accept a firing pin accommodating centerfire cartridges as well. An external manual extractor is located below the fore end. The top of the barrel is marked “No. 38”. The left side of the frame is marked “MERRIMACK ARMS & MFG. CO./NEWBURY PORT MASS./BALLARD’S PATENT/NOV. 5 1861”. Both the nose cap and the butt plate are of iron. The overall condition is very good. The iron parts feature a nice even patina. The markings are clear and legible. All serial numbers match, including the nose cap, fore end, barrel, frame and butt plate. The walnut stock is in good condition. The bore has good rifling and is clean. The action is strong. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 29-3/4 inches in length. Caliber: .38 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1700 #10430 SOLD Antique: Yes |
