Beautiful German Schuetzen with System Bornmueller action in 8.15x46R
Description:
The rifle is a very beautiful schuetzen with a System Bornmueller action designed and built by Richard Bornmueller, 1844 – 1908, Herrenstr. 26, Suhl. The action is marked with Bornmueller’s serial number 25156 B. The Bornmueller action is a true drop block action.
A great discussion of the System Bornmueller (Blockschlosssystem-Bornmüller) with drawings of the action can be found on the German Hunting Gun webpage listed here: ://germanhuntingguns › bornmuller-richard-suhl. Many features of this action will be found in other systems developed over the next 75 years by other gun makers. The action was later renamed as the Ideal action.
The fluted barrel is 75 CM (29.5") long and has the original target front and rear sights which is adjusted using clock key. The rear sight also has an adjustable slit with a block out lever for the peep.
The barrel is marked “S in hexagon“ which is the mark of the Schilling forge, Suhl that did most of the rough forgings for the Suhl gun trade. The other mark under the barrel is unknown and may be Bornmueller’s own? This rifle was manufactured before 1892 because there are no proof marks which, after 1892, were mandatory in Germany and Austria.
This rifle was retailed by Eduard Wundhammer, Ried (a town) in Ober-Oesterreich, close to the German border. Certainly a close relative of Ludwig/Louis Wundhammer, 1853 – 1919, first in Regensburg, later Los Angeles, a famous American gunsmith of the early 1900s who built the first Springfield sporters.
Frank Zika (custom mold maker, now deceased) made this ring mold for this rifle based upon a chamber cast. This mold will be part of the rifle package. IBullets are cast 20/1 lead/tin. The Zika mold is a 3 piece mold with a bottom plug that can be adjusted for bullet weight similar to the old Perfect molds.
A “sight bar” was machined to slide onto the rib. The sight bar is slotted to it can be tightens to lock it in place. The sight bar has target blocks. The sight bar allows a target scope to be installed without D&T (defacing) the rifle. Because this sight bar was made especially for this schuetzen, it is included in the sale.
There is some RWS brass that was used with this rifle and will be included as part of the sale. In match shooting, only one case needs to be used. After each shot, that case is deprimed, primed, charged with powder, and a ring bullet seated in the case mouth.
This rifle will come with a custom Frank Zika ring mold, machined sight bar for target scope, and RWS brass. The cost of this package is $2850. The target scope (shown in pictures) is not included in this price but is available separately. Shipping is $125.
