Sharps Borchardt Custom .225 Winchester Original Bridgeport-Model 1878
Description: Beautifully customized original Sharps Borchardt that, on the receiver ring, bears the trademark/name of historic Denver gunsmith, trader, and Indian fighter, “J.P. LOWER” (for John Pray Lower). Being under the scope, we could not get a good photo of that. Markings on the left side of the receiver are “SHARPS RIFLE CO BRIDGEPORT C…” with parts of the name polished away and the letters after C (for Connecticut) gone – owing to modifications described next. Serial Number 192xx appears beneath the address. The receiver has been modified by rounding-off the top of the receiver ring, and by modifying the contours of the upper-rear-receiver edges to make the loading platform more accessible (for use with a scope, we presume). This makes the rear section of the action appear longer. The front trigger is deeply checkered, and the action, lever, and other metal parts have been polished and reblued. The .225 Winchester Barrel is Straight, (approximately) 26 Inches Long, and 0.925 Inches in Diameter with what appears to be an 11-Degree Target Crown. Rifling is sharp and the bore looks excellent to the naked eye using a flashlight. Caliber markings are on the left side of the barrel, just ahead of the rear scope base. The barrel cannot have been installed by Lower, as the .225 Winchester was introduced nearly 50 years after his death. Regarding the receiver modifications, we cannot say whether those were done by JP Lower or later, at the time of re-barreling. The Rifle is Exquisitely Stocked in what appears to be Natural-Grain Tiger-Stripe Maple. The Checkered Buttplate is hard plastic. A Vintage Weaver T-25 Steel-Tube Micro-Trac Target Scope (Serial # 025679) Sits atop Standard 3/8” Dovetail Mounts with Rings marked “AUSTRALIA” in tiny letters on their front faces. This rifle shows minor blemishes from use and storage. Allowing that it has been refinished and reblued over its 140+ year life, we estimate the condition of the Rifle itself, excluding the Scope, at 95 Percent-plus of it’s refinished condition. According to Fjestad and others these have a Single (Front) Trigger with the Rear 'Trigger' being a Safety.
