Kittredge Shipped Sharps Model 1874 Heavy Barrel Buffalo Rifle 45 2 7/8
SALE PENDING
Description: For your consideration is a Sharps Model 1874 that has spent most of its life out west, and has been frontier modified during that time. This sharps was built on Oct. 17, 1877 as a Model 1874 weighing in at 14 lbs 9 oz with a 30 inch heavy octagon barrel chambered for the 45 2 7/8 Sharps round, aka 45-110. It was then shipped off in an order of 10 guns to B. Kittredge & Co. - all of the guns in this order were 14 and 15 lb rifles. It is noted in the factory letter that heavy barrel rifles that were shipped to this location are considered to be western guns, as they almost always went further west onto another retailer or hunter. At some point in the period, the rifle was modified - the 30 inch barrel was shortened to 26 inches, the forearm had a pewter tip added, the factory sights were replaced with non-factory ones, and the buttstock was wrapped in hide (likely as a field repair for a crack in the buttstock). These modifications are all indicative of heavy frontier use where the rifle could not be shipped back to the factory for modifications, and so they used what was available. After these modifications, the rifle now weighs a bit over 13 lbs. The rifle is in generally good condition despite its hard life. The serial numbers match throughout - there is also a "10" marked on the bottom of the barrel. I have seen this marking on other Kittredge guns, some that went on to Walter Cooper of Bozeman, MT, but I cannot find any research indicating that that is 100% confirmed as being the shipping location. The action and triggers work as they should without issue. The lever spring is a bit worn as can be expected, but does not prevent the rifle from functioning. The barrel, measing in at 1.2 inches across flats, retains good rifling, as can be seen in the photo. The wood, though beat up and being repaired in some areas, does not have any areas of weakness. All in all, a very cool "buffalo rifle" that undoubtedly led an interesting life. It would make a great addition to a collection of frontier guns, or after having it checked out by a gunsmith to verify the safety of shooting it, could be used to hunt buffalo yourself. If you have any questions or would like any different photos, just shoot me a message. The payment methods listed are the only ones that I will accept. The price includes fully insured shipping.
