Here we present an antique Ethan Stillman U.S. Contract Model 1808 Percussion Conversion Musket, manufactured circa 1812 in Burlington, Connecticut. Ethan Stillman was born in Westerly, Rhode Island in 1768. In 1803 he moved to Burlington, where he established a gunsmith shop. It was here that he undertook the 1808 contract which he apparently fulfilled after considerable difficulties with the U.S. Government. This musket is one of around 1,885 believed delivered under a 3,500 gun contract with the state of Connecticut by Ethan Stillman of Burlington, Connecticut, based on the Springfield "Model 1795" Charleville pattern muskets. They are often referred to by collectors as Model 1808s. Ethan Stillman 1808 contract muskets are described on pages 204-205 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II". The left of the barrel at the breech is marked with an oval proof containing what is attributed as clusters of grapes as in the Connecticut state seal. Marked " STILLMAN" at the center of the lock.

Ethan Stillman was one of 19 gunmakers contracted by the U.S. government to manufacture the Model 1808 Musket. This example would have started out life as a flintlock and likely converted sometime prior to the Civil Wart when the more reliable percussion firing system was being used. Arms were scarce at the start of the war, and many so called “obsolete” weapons were brought out of storage and pushed into service.

The War of 1812 was a conflict lasting about three years that was fought between the United States and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The conflict began when the United States declared war in June of 1812 and ended in a restoration of the pre-war status quo when a peace treaty agreed to earlier was ratified by the United States in February 1815. Its eventual consequences included the establishment of a separate Canadian state and an end of hopes for an independent American Indian confederation in the Northwest opening the way for the western expansion of the United States.

The overall condition is good overall. Strong action. Good bore for its age. The stock is in good shape and remains solid throughout. “1812” dated lock. Markings are legible. Much surface pitting is present on the barrel at the breech. Here is a great early American percussion conversion musket!
