Superb CW Gallagher .50 Cal. Percussion Breechloading Carbine
Description: Superb CW Gallagher .50 Cal. Percussion Breechloading Carbine Offered here for sale and just acquired from a prestigious collection of Civil War arms is this superb Gallagher breechloading Civil War carbine. This saddle ring carbine is regarded as a fine performing and accurate cavalry arm used during the Civil War. An early example of a single shot, breech loading, .50 caliber, percussion model Gallagher carbine issued to the Federal cavalry during the Civil War. Mahlon J. Gallagher, a South Carolina native, developed the weapon while he resided in Savannah, Georgia in July 1860. From its factory location at 12th and Thompson St in Philadelphia, the firm produced almost 18,000 of these carbines for the Federal government from 1861 to 1865. These carbines saw extended service with Union horse soldiers during the war . The Gallagher featured a breech loading mechanism which consisted of a lever / trigger guard combination that when pushed down, allowed the barrel to slide forward and tilt up and away from the barrel. Though Gallager boasted that his design would facilitate the easy removal of the spent casing from the breech, this extraction action by some was a major defect of his weapon but a strength to others. This specimen bears serial # 24316 and features a 22¼” long round barrel, no fore-end or comb with a total length of 39½”. Fitted with a sling bar with saddle ring on the left side of the breech frame, the carbine also has a two-leaf rear sight, iron blade front sight and a slightly curved butt plate. Stamping “GALLAGER / PATENTED JULY 17TH 1860” on lock plate. Also “Manufactured by Richardson and Overman -Philada.” The carbine retains the large majority of blue on barrel, thinning in places and mixing with a grey patina and some light spotting in places. The receiver retains the great majority of its case colors. The inspectors cartouches on barrel and stock are sharp and excellent. The iron patchbox retains nearly all of its blued finish. Just a few minor bruises to buttstock. It has been our experience that the great majority of specimens acquired over the years exhibited harsh use and wear from service. This is one of the finest examples that we have acquired. Great collectible. Thank you for your winning bid.
