Superb Civil War Joslyn .52 Cal. Breechloading Carbine
Description: Superb Civil War Joslyn .52 Cal. Breechloading Carbine Offered here for sale and just acquired is an excellent example of the breech-loading .52 caliber Joslyn carbine as carried by a number of Union cavalry regiments in the Civil War. Approximately 2,201 examples were purchased by the government for Civil War service with the remainder sold privately through dealers like Schuyler, Hartley and Graham, who listed it in their catalog. This one has superb sharp government inspector cartouches on the left side flat and matching serial numbers, 6876. This is the standard configuration with markings that are super sharp. The lock marks are sharp: “JOSLYN FIREARMS Co. / STONINGTON / CONN.” The 21”barrel retains all of its military blued finish and the hammer, lockplate and receiver retain all of their case colors, slightly thinning in spots but excellent. The bore is excellent. The wood has a tight fit to the metal. Nice color and shows small handling dings, small pressure dents but is solid and shows two very sharp cartouches on the left side above the sling bar plate with the buttstock also exhibiting inspector’s initials and strikingly sharp “U.S.”. Joslyn carbines were widely used. The majority of the thousand in the first shipment of the M1862 in August 1863 went to the 1st NY Dragoons (19th NY Cavalry,) who served with the Army of the Potomac and saw action beginning in September 1863 and considerable fighting in Grant’s Overland Campaign of 1864. This as fine an example as we have had in our more than 50 years in the business and an example of the M1862 which would look great in a cavalry display or any Civil War collection.
