With Fantastic Tiger Striped Full Length Maple Stock
Here we present an antique Double Barrel Percussion Long Rifle, made circa 1850 in the United States. Compared to their single barrel brethren, these double barrel long rifles are quite scarce, as well as being diverse. Some have been made in the “Mule Ear” fashion, with two flat hammers mounted on the side of the gun, one for each barrel. Others feature swiveling barrels and one hammer. This one has been made with fixed, superposed barrels, with a hammer and percussion nipple for each. The left hammer has been extended to accommodate this design.
This double barrel long gun features a handsome, full-length, tiger-striped maple stock. The stock fully encloses the bottom barrel. Each barrel is smooth bored and .48 caliber. This rifle is equipped with a front sight blade and semi-buckhorn rear sight. Triggers are very crisp double set for extreme accuracy. The only maker’s mark is at the junction of the barrel and tang, which is a simple depiction of a wolf. This is a superb and unique version of a smooth rifle.
Overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have an even patina. The tiger maple stock is solid, with only a minor sliver at the top, just forward of the right lock plate. The bores are smooth and clean. The action is strong.
